Tuesday, May 26, 2009

Scholarships & Financial Aid recognized Rebecca Hapes as the 2009 recipient of the Dr. Robert M. Gates Inspiration Award at the 2009 Regents’ Scholars Spring Banquet. Hapes is a Senior Academic Advisor with the Department of Entomology.

Hapes was nominated by one of her students, who spoke highly of her guidance and knowledge. As well as serving as an advisor, Hapes also teaches a directed-studies class, which her nominator felt improved those students who took it. “This class offered various assignments that truly made us reflect on ourselves as we go through college,” he said. “The fact that she is an advisor and teaches classes shows her dedication to her students and the University.”

Hapes advises both undergraduate and graduate students regarding their educational and professional goals.“Considering the vast number of faculty and advisors who work tirelessly to provide all students, but specifically first generation students, with the tools needed to be successful in their transition to Texas A&M University, I am incredibly honored to have been selected for this award,” she says.

She adds, “It makes it all the more special that one of my students took the time of out their hectic and stressful schedule to nominate me for this.” Her student was present when Hapes personally received the award at a small reception.

The Dr. Robert M. Gates Inspiration Award was established to honor Gates’ legacy and tenure at Texas A&M. He provided the inspiration for the Regents’ Scholars Program and continues to support the program. He also challenged the faculty and staff to provide support for the recipients of the scholarship through mentoring and advising. Each year at the spring banquet an outstanding faculty member will be recognized by the Regents’ Scholars Program for continuing their support of the program and the students.
