TAMUmobile Brings Texas A&M To Your iPhone

Tuesday, June 09, 2009

Looking for a currently enrolled Aggie? Texas A&M University has an “app” for that.

Want to find out the latest news about the university or get Aggie athletic scores? There’s an application for that, too – all thanks to a new program that provides “Texas A&M to go.” TAMUmobile means no longer having to rely on a desktop computer, or even a laptop.

TAMUmobile has rolled out as a suite of free mobile applications geared toward providing information about the university – to go. What previously took several clicks on the university’s web site is now integrated into a mobile package that includes a campus directory, campus news, athletic updates and TAMUtv, which will allow access to university and student videos.

- Directory – Search the Texas A&M directory with advanced filters (filter by name, email, phone number, address).

- Athletics – Get scores, news, and schedules for Aggie sports, athletes, events and more.

- News – Get the latest news and information about and from Texas A&M.

- TAMUtv – View Texas A&M institutional and student-generated videos.

Texas A&M is the first public institution and the largest university in the nation to introduce this mobile suite. Similar suites of university-based applications have been introduced at other universities, including Stanford and Duke. Terriblyclever Design, the company behind DukeMobile and iStanford, has also developed the initial applications for Texas A&M.

The Texas A&M applications debuted Tuesday (June 9) and will be followed in mid-July with additional applications such as “Events,” “Courses” and “Maps.” The “Events” app, for example, will allow users to browse stories or listings about campus “happenings,” including performances and lectures. The “Courses” app will allow students to search for classes, find out when they are offered and directly call or email the professor using their mobile devices. “Maps” will allow users to search for buildings on campus and use GPS (global positioning system) to find their locations.

The iPhone or Touch iPod devices will be the initial vehicles for the applications, but they will be adaptable to other systems. Plans are being laid to expand the applications to other mobile devices in the fall.

“Launching a suite of mobile applications will enable us to put valuable, relevant Texas A&M resources and information right at the fingertips of our students, faculty, staff, former students and Aggie fans everywhere,” explains Jason Cook, Texas A&M vice president for marketing and communications.

Tim McLaughlin, head of the Department of Visualization at the Texas A&M College of Architecture, is working with student developers to produce future applications. An obvious application, he says, is to locate former students still connected to the university – the thousands-strong “Aggie Network.”

“We are doing cutting-edge things with clever use of technology that are very much in line with the traditions and values of the university,” he says. “This first application is just a stepping stone to other things we have ideas for.”

TAMUmobile can now be downloaded directly from any iPhone or iPod Touch, as well as directly to your computer via iTunes. Here is the direct link: http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=318638320&mt=8.
