Thursday, November 05, 2009

A sneak preview of the opening segment of an upcoming History Channel series titled “WWII in HD” will be shown Monday (Nov. 9) at Texas A&M University under sponsorship of the Corps of Cadets. The presentation is set for 6:30 p.m. in Rudder Theatre.

The sneak preview is free and open to the public. Tickets are required and may be picked up at the Appelt Aggieland Visitor Center in Rudder Tower. For more information, call 979-845-4641 or email specialevents@tamu.edu.

The documentary, narrated by Gary Sinise, will be broadcast on The History Channel the week of Nov. 15-19, with two hours airing each night.

The drama/documentary – using original, color footage, most of which has never been seen before – is viewed through the eyes of 12 Americans who fought in or contributed to the war effort. The series draws upon more than 3,000 hours of World War II footage culled from archives and private collections around the world.

Restored and enhanced through HD technology, the documentary follows a handful of people as their personal journeys intersect with one another throughout the war.

Among those profiled is war reporter Robert Sherrod; an Army nurse named June Wandrey, who served from the beginning of the war in North Africa to the liberation of the camps in Germany; Shelby Westbrook, a young African-American from Toledo, who became a member of the famed Tuskegee Airmen; Jimmie Kanaya, the son of Japanese immigrants, who served in the U.S. Army and was imprisoned in Europe; and Jack Werner, a Jewish émigré, who escaped from Austria before the war and fought in the Pacific Theater.

The veterans also appear, recounting their experiences.

In addition to Sinise, other actors lending their voices include Tim Dekay, LL Cool J, Rob Lowe, Jason Ritter, Amy Smart and Steve Zahn.
